38mm Laminate Products

  • Sizes and profiles 38mm Laminate benchtops

We keep Benchtop Blanks in two (2) widths (600mm and 900mm) and one (1) length (4200mm) and one (1) thickness (38mm) for all of surface designs in stock.

600mm benchtops include one (1) post-formed or or ABS square long edge and our 900mm benchtops include two (2) post-formed or ABS square long edges.

Here are some examples of the post-formed or ABS square edges:

The profile of post-formed edge is describe as a tight form with 3.5mm radius roll top and bottom.

  • HPL and Laminate Manufacturers

HPL is produced by saturating multiple layers of kraft paper with phenolic resin. A layer of printed décor paper is placed on top of the kraft paper before pressing. The resulting sandwich is fused together under heat and pressure (more than 1,000 PSI).

Special grades of HPL can be post-formed around curved edges by application of heat and restraint. HPL is laminated to a panel utilizing a variety of adhesives.

The laminates come from various suppliers in Europe:

    • Fenix – Italy
    • Duropal – Germany
    • Lamicolor – Italy
    • Arpa – Italy
    • Saviola – Italy
    • Cleaf – Italy
    • Puricelli – Italy

The HPL that is used on our benchtops come with certain attributes that might’n be found from other suppliers around the world.

    • Resistance to impact
    • High scratch resistance
    • High resistance to cigarette burns
    • High resistance to chemical products for household use
    • High resistance to artificial light
    • High resistance to abrasion
    • High resistance to heat 220C
    • Low formaldehyde emissions
    • Antibacterial
    • Antimicrobial

  • Substrate

High Moisture Resistant substrate board is used in the manufacture of Express Benches Benchtops.

It is the Particle Board (Chip Board) that the HPL Laminate is adhered to.

HMR board is crafted by adding a special high-quality resin to the board, which gives it extra moisture resistance.

Properties of the HMR Substrate are listed below:

    • High bending resistance
    • High resistance to external layers peeling
    • Low thickness swelling after water immersion
    • High inner layers cohesion
    • Low formaldehyde emissions

  • ABS Edging (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

One of the foremost advantages of ABS edging is its versatile and consistent levels of resistance. It’s hardwearing, and can absorb the impacts of most casual knocks and bumps without leaving a scratch, making it particularly useful in frantic family households. It’s also strongly resistant to household chemicals or spills, and can easily tolerate relatively high levels of heat without shrinking or otherwise becoming damaged.

ABS Edging is used on the benchtop edges that are selected.

ABS Edging is Digitally Colour Matched.

ABS Edging is applied to the benchtop using an Edge banding Machine.

The edge of the material to which the edge tape is to be applied passes along the machine. A series of processes take place.

Glue is applied to the material being edged (heated to 180 degrees) and edge tape is then applied to the edge.

A series of cutters and shapers trim the edge tape to get the desired profile and buffers finish off the process.

Some delicate hand filing is used to take off any access on the corner rounds.

  • Joins

We use three types Mason Mitre, Straight Mitre and Butt Joins.

    Mason Mitre

A mason’s mitre is a type of mitre joint, traditionally used in stonework or masonry but commonly seen in kitchen countertops. In a mason’s mitre, the two elements being joined meet as for a butt joint but a small section of one member is removed creating a socket to receive the end of the other. A small mitre is made at the inside edges of the socket and on the end of the intersecting member so that edge treatments are carried through the joint appropriately.

    Straight Mitre

A Straight Mitre is typically used to match edge profiles and also enhance the visual appearance of the surface design.

Most clients choose straight mitres when they have selected wood type surface designs for the appearance of the grains meeting at the join.

    Butt Join

We use what we call a Butt Join to join two benches in a straight line. Reasons for doing this is for a longer straight benchtop or the ability to install a longer benchtop where access only allows a smaller dimension.

We do not offer these in the ordering system as they are problematic with profiles not aligning perfectly.

    Supplied Components

When joins have been selected in the order. Toggles are supplied. These are used to join the benchtops along with adhesive. Express Benches routes Toggles holes on the under side of the ends being joined, this allows the toggles to be inserted and tightened to create a strong join.

  • Clips and Notches

Clips and Notches are offered on the Online Ordering/Quoting System.

    Clips

When a clip is selected, dimensions are required on 2 sides of the corner. This information is then supplied in the order summary. We have found the best outcome for the clip option is to use a mason mitre male join with a 30mm radius this allows the ABS edging to start at the profiled edge and continue to the opposite corner.

    Notches

A Notch is cut out on the corner. When a Notch is selected on Corners stage of the benchtop design, 2 dimensions are asked for to describe the length and width of the notch. Notches are selected if the benchtop has to allow for pole, window sill or wall. Demand is not high for this option as most installers like to measure again when benchtop is on site.

  • Presentation and Packaging

After cutting joins, ends and applying edges, all parts are checked and toggles added. The order is ready for packaging.

Packaging Consists of 4mm MDF cover sheet top and bottom and 40 mm pieces of benchtop off cuts place as a protective end cap on the order.

It then proceeds through the wrapping machine where a bubble wrap sleeve is applied and then tightly wrapped with ceran wrap.

After wrapping 16 mm MDF is applied to the long edges of the order and strapped in place with 75mm gluts in place.

Compact Laminate Products

  • Sizes and profiles for Compact Laminate benchtops

On the ordering system we offer any size up to 900mm in width for our Compact Laminate products.

The maximum length we offer is 4100mm.

The thickness of the compact Laminate is 10mm.

Because the whole sheet is 1610mm x 4200mm our first price point is widths up to 795mm. This is half the full Sheet width allowing for trimming. This means any width up 795mm is charged at this rate per lineal meter or part there of.
The next Price point is from 796-900mm. When we cut the full sheet at a width of 900mm + Allowance for trimming. This will leave us with a 600mm width, this is a popular size so waste is minimized.

    Finished Edges

The finished edge we offer is 1mm x 1mm arriss top and Bottom with a smooth edge with no saw marks.
The core or middle of our compact laminate has the same colour tone as the surface design.

Available in 10mm our Compact Laminates offer modern streamlined look without compromising on the strength of the material. Extensive testing has rated these 10mm Benchtops with the same tensile strength as thicker alternative bench surfaces.

The same attributes for 38mm Laminate Benchtops are applicable to our Compact Benchtop range:

    • Resistance to impact
    • High scratch resistance
    • High resistance to cigarette burns
    • High resistance to chemical products for household use
    • High resistance to artificial light

Learn more about our Compact Laminate (10mm) products and our Laminate (38mm) products.

  • Entering the sizes of your benchtop

    Step 4: Sizing and Dimensions

This step will reveal the selected bench shape at it’s maximum available dimensions.

Each edge has a field with the dimension within that can be edited by the customer. As each edge dimensions are edited or customised the bench shape will adjust in real time.

Once all dimensions have been correctly entered by the customer they then proceed with their order by clicking next.

  • Selecting your benchtop joins

    Step 5: Joins

This step offers a selection of join types, in this case a vertical or horizontal mason mitre or a straight mitre. Again the customer can select the available join types by clicking the toggle (selector) button.

The selection of joins will be limited if there is a post-formed edge on the outside (as example: using 900mm width with 2 long post-formed edges).

  • Specifying your benchtop’s seen and unseen edges

    Step 6: Edges

Customers can select where they want ABS edging applied (called seen edges) by clicking the toggle (selector) button on the edge.

Seen edges (post-formed or chosen seen edge) are identified by use of eye icons (for ‘seen’ edges).

Selections might not be available if there is a join on the edge or if there is a post-formed edge already in place.

    Types of edges

Here are some examples of the post-formed or ABS square edges:

The profile of post-formed edge is describe as a tight form with 3.5mm radius roll top and bottom.

  • Selecting your benchtop corners

    Step 7: Corners

Selections are offered on the outside corners of the benchtop. Customers can select the corner (by clicking the toggle which opens a pop up info window) to apply a choice of two options being a Clip or Notch with dimensions. Corners can also be selected as seen edges.

    Different corner types

  • Your benchtop overview

Main Feature on this page is the VIEW QUOTE selection, when the customer clicks on VIEW QUOTE all the details of the benchtop are revealed including delivery address and price including delivery.

Customers can also select DISPLAY SURFACE DESIGN which will put an image of the surface design on the benchtop plan. If customers want multiples of the benchtop they can also add this number in.

  • Viewing your cart

Once the customer has finished designing their benchtop they can order the benchtop or add another bench to their order. They can select ORDER NOW or ADD TO CART both selections lead to the same place YOUR CART. Here they can PROCESS ORDER to confirmation, SAVE QUOTE and ADD BENCH. Customer can inspect, edit and delete on this page and also add multiples.

At the bottom of the Cart window is the ‘Add Bench’ button. Customers can click this button which will save the initial benchtop in their cart and allow them to create a new benchtop to then add to their order.

  • Finalising your order

Once the customer has finished adding benchtops and are ready to order they select ‘Process Order’. They are then directed to the ORDER PROCESSING page. Here they have one last chance to review the order and must agree to the terms and conditions to finalise the order.
